Kinja'd!!!

Hopefully just temporarily.

I knew the transmission needed service, but it was... unhappy last night. Slight delay between shifts, little bit of flutter at one point... all bad things.  No codes, though I haven’t checked the transmission ECU recently, but clearly the signs of needing service.

Getting the pan/filter on order today or tomorrow and will get after it next week. In the interim it gets it sit in the driveway and think about what it did.

Luckily these transmissions, allegedly, respond well to a good service.... hopefully. Because I’m used to the horror stories about Volvo’s that get an ATF fluid change and then stop working altogether .

Heh.

That’s got the Merc transmission in it, right?

Have you had the battery disconnected recently? Beca u se that tranny can lose its calibration when disconnected, which buggers up the shift quality. There’s a procedure for recalibrating it on the forums somewhere - involves a sequence of turning the car on and off, a long period of idling, and some gentle acceleration-deceleration runs. Not hard, but takes about half an hour and needs a chunk of deserted road. I’d try that before inves t ing actual money....

Fun fact: the manual trans in my Volvo takes ATF fluid

My Volvo got done a week and a half ago , and nothing has gone wrong yet . Both good (proper shifting) and bad (“ garage shift” clunks) behavior remains unchanged. We will see...

Looks like it is a ZF 6HP26.  Good into, thank you!  That is actually relieving to know and I’ll look into it. Since the tranny is sealed and I have no maintenance records, the plan was to do the service anyway. This just moves my time table forward.

Fun fact: The manual transmission in my Saab takes motor oil...

But serious a manual taking ATF seems really weird.

Fingers crossed! I dunno, I’ve heard about a few that were operating OK but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overdue for a service failing after said service. My shop usually won’t do one in that circumstance .

It’s likely the ZF 6 speed, right? It’s a hardy transmission that’s basically the same as the ZF 8 used today. My LR4 has a weird...sensation? Idk what else to call it...from the trans around 2-2500 rpm under load. It gets better with fresh fluid, but doesn’t go away.

Hopefully a change in fluid and new filter will get you right as rain. It’s unlikely there’s any other major issue.

No, it's by ZF. Jaaag have used them for a long time and continue so to do. The Mond...er, XType had an AW automatic.

I was at 100k miles which is what this shop (and some previous Volvo specialists I’ve been to) recommended. So yeah hoping to avoid the case where transmission sludge is the only thing holding it together. If it explodes, it’s lasted long enough that I don’t have to feel super bad about replacing the transmission or even the whole car. Living up here in the Northeast (or just relatively close to Opposaurus?) has been making me crave AWD wagons anyway.

Oh, I thought the ZF was only in non-R cars, because it wouldn’t take the higher  torque or the supercharged engine.  Must have upgraded it by your MY.

Yeah I think they switched to the ZF 6-speed in 2003 (according to wikipedia)

I’ve read up on the trans service for these cars as I would plan on doing a service soon after I would purchase.  It seems pretty straight-forward as long as you are able to measure the trans temp. 35*C I think and fill it til it leaks out of the fill hole.

I did the transmission service on my 1998 es300  via a vacuum drain through the dipstick. I did three drain and fills and it runs great.
